Main Street and Kirk Road Crosswalk Campaign
Saint Charles, Illinois
Hello, my name is Sam Parker.
I have been a resident of Saint Charles, Illinois for 24 years. I am a full-time pedestrian. While the reasons behind this may seem secondary, I want to share them with you. I live with a visual disability caused by Stargardt Macular Dystrophy, a genetic disease that has taken all of my central vision and left me with an acuity of 20/400. I mention this not for sympathy, but to clarify that I have no other choice but to be one of many pedestrians in Saint Charles. This cause is deeply personal to me, but it’s not just about me.

Walkability should be a priority in any municipality’s development plan. Unfortunately, the city of Saint Charles is not only neglecting this, but actively undermining it with the decision not to extend sidewalks to the south of Fox Haven Square. I understand that many of you drive everywhere and may feel this issue doesn’t concern you. However, I urge you to consider two undeniable facts:

First, disability is a minority anyone can join at any moment. A stroke, a car accident, a trip and fall, or negligence by others can change your life forever in an instant. Second, we will all age, and most of us will eventually lose the ability to drive, and perhaps even to walk.

Please help me in advocating for the future—both yours and everyone else’s.
Our mission is to persuade the City of Saint Charles to include crosswalk development at all 4 corners of Kirk Road and Main Street with the Fox Haven Square development.
Join my campaign. Take action. Contact the city.
